Golf Results - 2013 July 28

On the US PGA Tour, the American Brandt Snedeker won his sixth career title with a victory at the Canadian Open on Sunday.

Snedeker weathered a pressure-packed final round and extended his lead from one shot to three over the final 18 holes of the tournament. Fellow-American Dustin Johnson, who was tied for the lead with three holes to play, took second place when his form failed him during the closing holes of the Open. Johnson shared second place with compatriots William McGirt, Matt Kuchar, and Jason Bohn.

Overnight leader Hunter Mahan voluntarily withdrew from the competition on Sunday when he learned that his wife was in labour. After opening the door for Snedeker and Johnson to do battle for the title, Mahan returned to Dallas for the birth of his daughter Zoe.

In Europe, the Russian Open was won in style by the Northern Irishman Michael Hoey.

Carding a final round score of 70 to finish four strokes ahead of his nearest competitors – the Englishman Matthew Nixon and last year’s winner, Alexandre Kaleka of France, Hoey continued the fine form he had displayed earlier in the tournament to win.

Sunday’s victory came as little surprise to fans and players at the Tseleevo Golf Club in Moscow – Hoey had carded a seven-under-par 65 during the third round to establish a significant lead going into the final day’s play.

For Hoey, Sunday’s win marks a turning point in his recent golfing career. The Ulsterman had been struggling with his game over the past few tournaments, with a few missed cuts earlier in the season. However, there was no doubt that his form had returned when he conquered the Russian Open.

Celebrating his fifth European Tour title, Hoey appeared ecstatic to be back in the winner’s circle, and may be a player to watch as the Race to Dubai heats up in the coming months.
