Player Profile: 30 Select Players Competing at the Nedbank Challenge

This week the European Tour kicks off its 2015 season with one of the most exclusive events on the world golf calendar – the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Now in its third decade, this $6.5 million event takes place each year at the Gary Player Country Club, Sun City Resort, South Africa.

Thirty players, including some of the world’s finest golfers as well as a handful of local favourites, take to the course to weather a weekend of intense competition and good sportsmanship at Africa’s Major – here are some of the faces you’ll see at this year’s tournament.

The top 10 club
The prestige and generous purse which have made the Nedbank Challenge famous also draw some of the world’s top-ranked players to accept invitations to the tournament. This year is no exception, with Thomas Bjorn, Tommy Fleetwood, Martin Kaymer, and Lee Westwood making appearances at the South African tournament.

Other well-known players taking to the course will include last-minute European Tour champion Marcel Siem, up-and-coming English player Ross Fisher and the larger-than-life golfing presence of Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiminez – a European Tour veteran who is enjoying great success during his final years on the professional circuit.

Local favourites
Seven South Africans will be joining the 2014 Nedbank Challenge field this season, with some well-known players from the international circuit taking part along with champions from the local Sunshine Tour.

Big-names including Tim Clark, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel will bring their wealth of international experience to the tournament, while newcomers such as George Coetzee, Danie Van Tonder, Dawie van der Walt and Jaco Ahlers will be given the opportunity to flex their golfing muscles as they compete with some of the world’s best players for the rich prize money at this year’s Nedbank Challenge.

With a mix of international and local talent on the course, the 2014 Challenge promises to be as exciting as ever – full results from the tournament will appear in next week’s golf news.
