The American Brooks Koepka won his first regular tour title on Sunday at the Turkish Airlines Open. This week's player profile takes a look at this talented young player's rise on both sides of the Atlantic as he celebrates his first big win in professional golf.
Early life
24-year-old Koepka was born in Wellington, Florida. Growing up in the golf-crazy sunshine state, he had no lack of good weather and great golf courses during his early years. By the time Koepka was a teenager, he had fixed his sights on a career in professional golf.
During his years at Florida State University, Koepka had his first taste of competitive golf, winning three collegiate titles and qualifying to play the 2012 US Open as an amateur. These early accolades gave the young man the motivation he needed to make his professional debut – Koepka has been playing on the European, PGA, and Challenge Tours since 2012.
Professional debut
Unlike many young American golfers who choose second-tier golf tours in their home country to launch their careers, Koepka opted to play on the Challenge Tour in Europe during his debut season.
This decision turned out to be a lucrative one, with the American winning his first title in 2012 at the Challenge de Catalunya.
His second year on the Challenge Tour, in 2013, saw Koepka win again at the Montecchia Open and Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana – with a third victory at the Scottish Hydro Challenge. The champion was on his way up, and the world's most competitive tours beckoned.
Reaching the top
In 2014 Koepka took the plunge when he qualified for the US PGA Tour. Weathering the pace of North America's top-ranked golf circuit, he finished fourth at the US Open and secured an invitation to the US Masters.
Koepka's first career win on the European Tour on Sunday marks a new chapter in his professional career. Golf fans can expect many more exciting final rounds from this energetic and dedicated player.
